Different types of diamonds
One of the ways you can personalize your jewelry is by adding diamonds. By adding diamonds, you can turn a plain name plate into a luxurious name plate. The diamonds are not big, however, it provides the right amount of sparkle that neither look overly fancy nor inexpensive.
There are many four distinctive characteristics of diamonds: cut, clarity, color, and carat weight.
Cuts:
Customers usually misunderstand diamonds cuts for the shape of the diamond. Diamond cuts are diamond's proportions, such as its depth and width and the uniformity of its facets--all characteristics that control brilliance, durability and other features we look for in a diamond. According to the difference in cuts, the light that is emitted out the diamond is different as well. For example, if light travels through a shallow cut diamond, the light will become lost out of the bottom of the stone and will not reflect the light back. Therefore, a shallow cut diamond will not provide the lustrous sparkle and will appear lifeless. On the other hand if the diamond is cut too deep, light will escape out the sides of the diamond darkening all portions of the stone. However, an ideally cut diamond will reflect light back to the top of the diamond providing brilliance and light in the stone.
The second characteristic of the diamond is clarity. Clarity is a term used to describe the absence or presence of flaws inside or on the surface of a diamond or other gemstone. A perfect stone with perfect clarity--clearness--is rare, and most flaws that do exist in jewelry grade diamonds cannot be seen without looking at stones through a jeweler's magnifying loupe. There are difference levels of clarity
FI- graded diamond is flawless- there are no external/internal flaws. This type of diamond is very rare and obviously very expensive.
IF- graded diamond is internally flawless however has slight external blemishes which are very hard to distinguish.
VVS1&VVS2- graded diamonds are slightly flawed. However these flaws are so minute that it is even hard for an experienced grader to detect.
VS1&VS2-graded diamonds have slightly more flaws than the VVS1 and VVS2, but these flaws are also very minute, therefore, it will be hard for the grader to detect them.
SI1 & SI2- graded diamonds have slight flaws that is detected by the grader.
I1&I2&I3- graded diamonds have noticeable flaws that may affect the transparency and brilliance of the diamond.
Clarity is just one of the four characteristics of a diamond. Don't worry if the clarity you choose if not the top quality because clarity itself does not make a diamond what its worth.
The third characteristic of diamond is the color.
Diamonds are not all truly colorless, but it's the colorless, often called white, which are diamonds that other shades are judged against. A lettering system from D to Z is used to identify the amount of color present in each diamond, with D awarded only to rare, totally colorless diamonds.
- D/E/F are colorless
- G/H/I/J are nearly colorless
- K/L/M are usually faintly tinted, and appear slightly yellow.
- N/O/P/Q/R are diamonds that are lightly tinted, usually yellow. Tint can be seen with the naked eyes.
- S/T/U/V/W/X/Y/Z are tinted, usually yellow, and may progress to a brownish color. The tint is visible to the naked eye, even when mounted.
There are other factors that affect the color of the diamond-fluorescence. Fluorescence means the diamond's color changes when it is exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Since UC radiation is a component of daylight and is also present in the fluorescent lit rooms, diamonds with this characteristic can appear to change color quite often.
The final characteristic of diamond is the carat weight. Once the cut, clarity, and color has been decided on, it will be easy to choose the carat weight because it is the size of the diamond. The size of the diamond usually depends on the person's style and taste. Also, the size of the finger makes a big difference as well. A 2 carat diamond will definitely look bigger if worn by a person with a size 5 finger compared to that of a person with a size 8 finger. The size of the diamond also depends on what type of setting you choose as well. It will be out of proportions if the setting you choose is simple and the diamond is extremely big. Overall, the proportions of the setting and the diamond and the person's style are something you should consider before you choose a carat for the diamond.
